Capita Outerspace Living

Positives

  • Forgiving
  • Easy To Butter
  • Fun Mtn Freestyle Twin

Negatives

  • Not As Poppy As Some Capita’s
  • No Real Set Back For Pow
  • Bucky In Soft Uneven Snow
  • Not the best grip in hard snow.

Summary

The Capita Outerspace Living is a board we have ridden for many years now, owned, and often recommended for those who want a forgiving mountain freestyle ride. Other than edge hold that is somewhat lacking in harder snow and a bucky nature in really soft, thick, uneven snow, this does everything well, which is all you can ask for from this kind of board.

Update 2025: The Capita Outerspace Living has the same shape and camber profile as its had for a very long time. It just got an updated core, base, and such. The overall ride is very similar. It just has more pop and better glide.

Capita Outerspace Living In Depth Written ReviewReview by The Good Ride

An Un-Paid, Un-Biased Breakdown Of How the Capita Outerspace Living Rides And Who It Is For

How It Was Tested:

I borrowed the Capita Outerspace Living for an extended demo and sent it back.

Approximate Weight

(We don’t put in the exact weight because, with wood cores, there is no consistency in a board’s weight)

Sizing

The Capita Outerspace Living 156 is the size I want for the above-mentioned specs. It’s a great size for an mtn freestyle board, and I don’t feel too heavy. Davey would like to size up one from the 161w for his specs, though, if they made a bigger size.

Sizing is all about balancing what fits your boot size and your weight for how you like to ride. If your boot is too wide, you can’t turn it; if it’s too narrow, you get the dreaded Toe & Heel Drag. Your weight is a close second to boot size because it determines how the board will feel under your foot.  Height comes in a distant 3rd. Some prefer control, so matching the boot size is the priority. Others prefer dampness over control and like to size up.

Here are some ideal US boot sizes for these boards.
148: 6.5-7.5
150: 7-8
152: 7.5-8.5
154: 8-9
156: 8.5-9.5
158: 9-10
160: 9.5-10.5
155w: 10-11
157w: 10.5-11.5
159w: 11-12
161w: 11.5-12.5

I would stay close to the Capita’s recommended weight range. If it comes down to boot size or weight, I would ensure it fits your boot first and then your weight a close second.

Shape

This is a directional twin but very close to being a true twin.

Camber/On Snow Feel/Ability Level

The Capita Outerspace Living has a mellow camber going just past the inserts and then a lot of rocker from there to the tip/tail. It makes for a stable but very forgiving ride. Very easy to one foot/flat base.

Edge Hold

The Edge hold isn’t ideal if you see a lot of hard-to-icy snow. It’s ok, but not what you want if you ride in the mid-west or on the east coast.

Flex Personalit

Capita’s flex personality has evolved so much over the last decade. They went from being stiff boards that could snap easy if flexed to hard going big to boards that can almost bend in half without breaking.

The pop has increased as well, and the Capita Outerspace Living pops really well for having such a mellow camber, and it’s easy to butter, too.

Uneven Snow

It’s doable in hard snow but not perfect and good in soft, uneven snow. However, Capita Outerspace Living isn’t that great in wet, thick, uneven snow. It bucks and bounces me around. It really allows the board to flex too much and then spring out of that uneven snow too much. It’s really noticeable on wet spring snow days or thick wet pow days when it’s tracked up.

Speed

I’m impressed with how well this mellow flexing ride can go straight without feeling hooky/wanting to turn. It’s no bomber but it’s good for its flex. Especially for a straight line into a kicker. .

Base Glide

The base glide of Capita Outerspace Living is very good for this price point and keeps improving yearly.

Turning Experience/Carving

Turn initiation was very quick and lively. It had a balanced, do-any kind of turning radius when I got it on edge. Carves aren’t bad for how little camber there is but if you want something that carves harder and you are more of an advanced rider, consider the Indoor Survival instead. Its almost full camber profile drives out of a turn much faster.

Powder

The Capita Outerspace Living floats well centered with all that rocker before the nose/tail for an almost true twin, but it’s not what you want if you want to set your board back in powder.

Switch/Jumps/Pipe/Jibs

It’s almost perfect either-way, switch, great at tracking into kickers, not afraid of jibs, and a very fun ride for softer pipe days.

Final Thoughts

Even though the camber is a little mellow/small for these camber-rich days, I still think the Capita Outerspace Living is a great choice for those who want a forgiving but very fun mtn freestyle twin.
